There are many different birds that make great pets for children.
From the ever popular budgerigar or Parakeet to cockatiels, zebra finches, canaries, and larger birds like love birds, pigeons, cockatoos and chickens.

Budgerigars
The reason that budgerigars are one of the best pets for a child is that particularly young male budgies can with a little patience and time be taught to talk with the added bonus they are very comfortable being handled and cuddled.
Training a Budgerigar
Our daughter at a young age wanted a budgerigar so we purchased “Scotch” from a local breeder who ensured all their budgies were handled very carefully as soon as they left the nest. This made training Scotch very easy and before long he was talking, sitting on our shoulder, snuggling in under our daughter’s long hair and “tunnelling” under our hands. Tunnelling is something budgies love to do and it is easy to teach them.
Most pet birds are relatively easy to train as long as you start when they are you.

Caring For Pet Birds
Pet birds are relative easy to care for with children being able to learn what is involved to provide appropriate food and water for their pet as well as the responsibility needed to clean and maintain the bird cage.
